It was a tough day for Cameron McEvoy at the Australian Trials. While it proved to be a setback for the Olympic champion, it was a moment of glory for 24-year-old Ben Armbruster, who touched the wall first in the men's 50m butterfly final.

He finished ahead of McEvoy and Kyle Chalmers to secure his spot in the Australian team for the Glasgow and Irvine events. It was an emotional moment for the Queenslander, and while talking to the media after the race, he reflected on winning when his parents were around. Armbruster dedicated the win to his mother, Shannon.

"I'll actually just single her out," he said. "Mum, take a step forward. Come here. Everyone, give my mum a round of applause. She's the best. Obviously, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her. Lots of early mornings when I was younger. Lots of support, believing in me when I didn't believe in myself. So she's the best."

In the scintillating race, Armbruster appeared in third place at the last moment. However, in the last second, he managed to outshine McEvoy and Chalmers and touched the wall in 22.90.

McEvoy, who was seemingly leading until a meter before the finish line, settled in second with 22.92, and Chalmers secured the third spot with 22.97.

With the result, Armbruster secured his place on the Australian team for both the Commonwealth Games and the Pan-Pacific Championships.

The Queenslander has impressed on the international stage before. He made his Commonwealth Games debut in 2022, finishing seventh in the men's 50m butterfly after clocking 25.37 seconds.

With the celebrations underway, Armbruster shared his thoughts on the victory and the road ahead.

Ben Armbruster Reflects on Emotional Triumph and Looks Ahead to Upcoming Games

Ben Armbruster celebrated the big moment by sharing a glimpse of his race on his Instagram account on Sunday.

He shared the clip, adding a heartfelt message in which he reflected on his excitement for the Commonwealth Games and Pan-Pacs.

"Finally made a team for an event that I train for 😅 massive thanks to my family and the team around me. Time for redemption, bring on commies and pan pacs," he wrote.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, giving Armbruster more than a month to prepare for the event.

Following that, he will represent Australia at the Pan Pacific Championships, scheduled to be held from August 10 to 15.

Although Cameron McEvoy and Kyle Chalmers missed out in the 50m butterfly final, both swimmers had already secured their places on the Commonwealth Games earlier in the week.
