May 2026 saw the inaugural session of the Enhanced Games, but on Sunday, a non-enhanced athlete took the win. During controversial games held on Memorial Day weekend, enhanced athletes fell to a swimmer at the peak of his performance.
Competitive swimmer Hunter Armstrong competed in the men’s 50m backstroke event at the Enhanced Games. Pure effort took him further than the athletes enhanced with substances, and the American took the win with a time of 24.21 seconds.
Armstrong won the event against two enhanced athletes, Irish swimmer Shane Ryan and Bulgarian Olympian Antani Ivanov. The other participant, Egyptian swimmer Sohib Khaled, also chose not to engage in enhancements.
The questionable Enhanced Games currently hold three major events, including Track & Field, Swimming, Weightlifting, and Strongman.
The event offers a $1 million prize for athletes who are able to beat an existing world record. While Armstrong was unable to beat the world record time for men’s 50m backstroke (23.55 seconds set by Russian swimmer Kliment Kolesnikov), he took home a prize of $250,000.
His victory brings about questions about the validity of the Enhanced Games. In an event catering to enhanced athletes, one who did not resort to enhancing substances came out on top.
Fans did not hold back as the poor showing by the enhanced athletes led to severe criticism.
Fans Rip Into Enhanced Games as Enhanced Athletes Fail to Beat Non-Enhanced Competition
Organizers of the Enhanced Games had predicted that several world records would be broken at the event. They were severely disappointed, as only one athlete, Greek swimmer Kristian Gkolomeev, was able to beat the established world record at the men's 50m freestyle event.
Fans were not pleased with the disappointing pool of enhanced participants, unable to keep up with the non-enhanced participants.
One fan sarcastically commented on the Games.
“What if the only enhancements that mattered were the friends we made along the way”
Another fan stated, “Once again, it is proven that it is more about technique and biomechanics than mere physical aptitude.”
The comment highlighted how, despite the use of performance-enhancing substances, the natural athletes win through pure dedication to the craft.
Another fan wrote about Armstrong and how the odds were stacked severely against him, and yet he emerged victorious.
“and his name is Hunter Armstrong, he had all the odds in his favor”
One fan believes that Armstrong’s skill and experience led him to victory over his competitors, who had advantages over him.
“Pure effort > Power handed to you”
Another fan made a funny comparison to video game, writing “It's like turning on cheats in a video game and still losing XD”
Clearly, fans were not thrilled by the inadequate performances by the athletes who were slated to break world records.
