The 14-time Olympic medalist, Katie Ledecky, has again rewritten history. She clocked 15:25.62 in the 1500m freestyle at the Fort Lauderdale Open on Wednesday.

This marks the fifth-fastest time in swimming history, and Ledecky remains the only woman to have ever swum faster in the distance. Her timing at the event was six seconds faster than Italy's Simone Quadarella, who was the No. 2 in this event.

Also, Ledecky currently holds the 13 fastest times in the history of the event. She was off the blocks rapidly as she clocked 58.74 for the first 100 meters and made the 200-meter turn in 2:00.14. She maintained the momentum by completing 400m in 4:04.12 and 800m in 8:12.66.

The 29-year-old, on Wednesday, lapped every swimmer in the heats of the 1500m freestyle. Her closest competitor was 15-year-old Sydney Hardy, who touched in 16:42.76.

Ledecky remains the heavy favorite in the 1500m freestyle. She has registered three of the fastest times of her career in the event since early 2025.

The 1500m freestyle event is Ledecky's stronghold as she has won two Olympic golds, six world titles, and 46 consecutive finals, according to the US Swimming database.

Ledecky has not lost a 1500m freestyle race since July 2010 at the Potomac Valley Championships against Kaitlin Pawlowicz. At that time, Ledecky was 13 years old.

Katie Ledecky Looking Forward to LA 2028 Olympics

In an interview earlier in January with People Magazine, Ledecky shared that she is looking forward to the 2028 Olympics, which will happen in Los Angeles.

She highlighted that she only takes about two weeks' break from training every year and has been working 'pretty hard' to maintain her form ahead of the Olympics.

"I'm in pretty hard training right now," she said in an interview with People earlier in January. "The Olympics are three years away, but they'll be here before you know it."

She also stated that she has many goals ahead of the LA 28. "I have a lot of other goals along the way to 2028, so I'm working hard and just putting in a lot of good training right now," she added.
