Katie Ledecky has a career few can dream of, but even the most decorated female swimmer ever confronts difficulties outside the water. Ledecky recently opened up about a very specific struggle she faces with a task most of us take for granted.

In an appearance on former swimmer Katie Hoff Anderson’s Unfiltered Water Podcast, the 14-time Olympic medalist was seen preparing a dish of tomatoes. She had an amusing response when she was asked about the tomatoes, per a video posted to the podcast’s Instagram page on May 31, 2026.

“The cutting is challenging,” she said, following which the room erupted in laughter, as did Ledecky herself.

The veteran swimmer was seen having trouble slicing into the tomatoes for her dish. The hosts picked up on why in the Instagram video

“Is that a butter knife you’re using?” someone in the room pointed out, which resulted in another bout of laughter.

Ledecky backed her decision to use a butter knife. She stated that she was strong enough not to require a normal, sharp knife.

Few would question the strength of the most decorated female Olympic gold medalist in history.

Ledecky won her most recent Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She bagged the gold for the 800 m freestyle. She also set a new Olympic record in the 1500-meter freestyle event with a time of 15:30:02.

A resume this decorated does not come easy, and tomatoes are definitely not the only thing keeping Ledecky going.

What Katie Ledecky Eats to Fuel Her Olympic Thirst

Being the best is not an easy task, and Ledecky looks to nutrition to keep her body running. The athlete trains for 25 to 30 hours a week. Such intensity demands a regulated diet, which Ledecky outlined in a July 24, 2024, article by EatingWell.

Ledecky’s mornings begin before most people, at 5:30 am. She prepares for the day with a hearty bowl of oatmeal and peanut butter. She accompanies this with a banana.

Ledecky prefers to keep lunch simple, eating almost the same thing every day. She speaks about how the modest omelette has kept her fueled over the years, with little variation.  She pairs this with toast to make a protein-heavy meal.

According to an August 2025 report by the official Olympics website, Ledecky notes, “Once I find something that is working well, that keeps me fueled before and after practice, I'll stick with it.”

The four-time Olympian freestyles dinner, mixing proteins with healthy sides and carbohydrates to form a meal that will support her active lifestyle. It’s no wonder she has dominated the sport since her very first event back at the London 2012 Olympics.
