Russian Swimmer Egor Kornev Responds to Olympian Cameron McEvoy's Competitive Assessment

Russian swimmer Egor Kornev remained confident of his goal for the European Championship. He had an impressive time playing at the Russian Cup earlier in April, and after winning the 100 m freestyle, he talked to the media.

He reflected on his performance and was also asked if he would expect competition from Australia's Cameron McEvoy, to which the Russian swimmer called him an "antique" in this sport.

"McEvoy, at 31, is already an old man," Kornev said via Matchtv.ru. "You could say he's an antique in this sport. I respect that, of course. He's a respectable old man. And he has a different profile. And I still have to work on that."

Kornev opened up about their style of training.

"He's cool, of course," he said. "But still, their training system is a little different. Training the 100m and 50m, or the 50m separately—those are completely different speeds. And since I'm young, I have to combine them."

McEvoy considered Kornev his "biggest threat" in the 50 m LCM freestyle, per Swim Updates. Back in April, the fans page shared a post on its X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:

"Olympic Champion Cameron McEvoy shares that Egor Kornev is one of his biggest threats in the 50 LCM Free."

Cameron McEvoy is noted as one of the most successful swimmers in the 50 m freestyle and is the world record holder in that category. He won a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in the 50 m freestyle.

The upcoming European Championship is scheduled for next month, and it would be interesting to see how the Australian swimmer performs in the competition.

Egor Kornev Reflects on His Plans For The European Championship

While talking to the reporter in April, Egor Kornev also reflected on his preparations for the European Championship in Paris.

"My goal is simply to try to swim fast," he said. "And not live by expectations, but to show here and now what I can do. Showing such seconds, even in the hole I'm in now, is good. For now, it's great, and I'm happy."

The 22-year-old Russian swimmer had been impressed with his performance so far. He caught the public's attention with a win in the 4x100 m relay at the World Short Course Championship in 2024.

While Kornev is building his career, McEvoy has so far cemented his name in the swimming world. He has four Olympic medals and 10 World Championship medals.
