17-year-old Japanese swimmer Shin Ohashi is taking inspiration from swimming stars Adam Peaty and Leon Marchand to improve his performance. Ohashi hit the headlines earlier this year after lowering his own record in the 100 m breaststroke.
He now has his eyes set on breaking the 200 m LCM breaststroke world record by next season, and for doing that, he said, per a recent Swim Update post on X (formerly Twitter), that he is taking notes from Peaty and Marchand.
The teen swimmer is studying Peaty's pull and Marchand's kick to achieve his goals and also hopes to reach 2:03 by the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Adam Peaty is widely known for his breaststroke pull, which helps him produce a powerful and fierce stroke, while Marchand is famous for his effective underwater kick.
While the teen is looking forward to his growth, Marchand has been impressive this season. He started the season in the 200 m individual medley at the 2025 USA Swimming Summer Series held in Austin, Texas, in January.
He touched the wall at 1:57.65 to secure the win and then finished as the runner-up in the 200 m breaststroke. Then in March, he competed in the Pro Swim Series in Westmont, where he won the 200 m backstroke and also the 200 m breaststroke.
Another highlight from this season was at the Speedo Fort Lauderdale open held in April, where he won the 200 m butterfly and 400 m individual medley.
Ohashi is taking the best of both to improve his own game.
“I’ll Do My Best to Achieve My Personal Best”: Ohashi Reflects on His Performance
At the 101st Japan Swim held in March at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, Shin Ohashi recorded a new world junior record in the men's 100 m breaststroke. He won the gold medal after finishing the race in 58.67, lowering his own benchmark from 59.57. He opened up about his performance while speaking to the media.
"I think my first high-altitude training camp overseas had an effect. I was happy, but I was also a little disappointed because the time was different from what I expected," he said. "I still want to get a faster time. I’ll aim for first place in both the 50m and 200m, and I’ll do my best to achieve my personal best and a new Japanese record [in those events].”
Now, with lessons learned and improvements in new techniques, he is looking forward to breaking another record.
